美国加利福尼亚大学圣巴巴拉分校科学家、1998年诺贝尔化学奖得主沃尔特·科恩24日说，随着人类对可再生能源的研发不断深入，太阳能和风能将成为世界主要能源。
科恩当天在美国化学学会的年会上说，人类对可替代能源的持续研发将开创一个“新纪元”。在这个“新纪元”中，太阳能和风能将成为世界主要能源。
科恩预测，石油和天然气的供给将在未来10年到30年达到顶峰，之后会迅速减少，取而代之的将是太阳能和风能等可再生能源。目前，石油和天然气约占全球能源消耗的60％。
科恩分析说，全球能源的发展趋势已经带来“两个空前的全球挑战”，一个是全球面临可接受能源的短缺，另一个是全球变暖及其后果给人类造成的威胁。人类应采取各种措施应对这些挑战，比如推动科学技术进步，以便开发丰富、廉价、安全、清洁且无碳的可替代能源。
他说，过去10年中，全球太阳能光伏发电量增加了约90倍，风能发电量增加了约10倍。未来10年内以及今后更长时间里，这两种用之不尽的能源将保持强劲增长势头，由此将带来太阳能和风能占主导地位的“新纪元”。
他呼吁那些人口基本趋向平稳的发达国家，特别是美国，应减少人均能源消耗。目前，美国人均能源消耗量大约是全球平均水平的5倍。
